In the year 1925 saw the installation of a reconstruction of Gutenberg’s workshop which soon became one of the museum’s main attractions. Type founding, typesetting and printing could now be demonstrated visually. The replica of Gutenberg’s printing press, rebuilt according 15th- and 16th-century woodcuts, proved an object of great interest to visitors and was henceforth shown at a large number of exhibitions all over the world.
Daily Demonstrations
All year round there are demonstrations on the hour at 10 and 11 am and at 12, 2, 3 and 4 pm of the Gutenberg printing press in the basement of the museum.
Please note that the museum is closed on public holidays and Mondays. There are no demonstrations on these days. Please also note that the museum is only open from 11 am to 3 pm on Sundays.
On a replica of Gutenberg's printing press visitors are shown how books and documents were printed during the day and age of Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of moveable lead type. Any questions you may have are answered at the end of the demonstration.
No prior booking for demonstrations is required. Just turn up in the museum basement at the given times and enjoy the show!
