The special exhibition of the Gutenberg-Museum entitled “Am achten Tag schuf Gott die Cloud” [On the Eighth Day God Created the Cloud] shows the Protestant Reformation as a media event. It also shows that letterpress printing played a decisive role in political developments which is exemplified by the Protestant Reformation.
The exhibition works on two levels. The basic exhibition focuses on the media-related dimension of this reformation, and so it deals with letterpress printing, the impact pictures had during the Reformation (between knowledge transfer and image building) and the Luther Bible as a “brand”.
The basic exhibition is complemented by three additional exhibitions taking place one after another. These exhibitions deal with core issues of the „Bible in pictures since Martin Luther“. Taking the Luther Bible as a starting point, the additional exhibitions place special emphasis on the subjects of “Angle and Devil”, “Friend and Enemy”, and “Nudity and Fashion”. Here the Gutenberg-Museum wants to show to which extent the ideas which we find in contemporary illustrations of the Luther Bible (such as the ideas of social morality and morality in families) have influenced us, are still important today and have entered the collective memory of our Kulturkreis.
The exhibition is sponsored by the German Federal Commissioner for Cultural and Media Affairs on the basis of a decision made by the German Bundestag.
